Herod Antipas
Herod Antipas was given the territories of Galilee and Perea, east of the Jordan (Luke 3:1). Called tetrarch because he ruled a part this father's kingdom, he reigned from 4 B.C. to A.D. 39. He sounded the city Tiberius on the western coast of the Sea of Galilee, also known as the Sea of Tiberius, naming it in honor of the Roman emperor. When Pilate sat in judgment of Jesus and learned He was from Galilee, the prefect sent Christ to Antipas, who mocked Jesus even while declaring Him innocent of any charges (Luke 23:5-15). Antipas then sent Jesus back to Pilate.
Antipas ruled the territories in red. The northern section included the city of Nazareth, the town in which Jesus was reared.
